My journey

My journey as an artist has taken me across the globe, from Ireland, New Zealand, Australia, Mexico and Argentina. I completed a research master's in Art and Education at Concordia University in Montreal, where my illustrated thesis focused on using comic books as an educational medium and their positive impact on mental health.

I've had the opportunity to present my work on comics and mental health at the Graphic Medicine Conference at Brighton and Sussex Medical School and at the Johns Hopkins Medical Campus. My career path led me to the Waterford Healing Arts Trust, where I served as the Artist in Residence at University Hospital Waterford. There, I contributed to the Participatory Arts and Mental Health Panel, working within the Activation Therapy Unit in UHW, St Otteran's Hospital Waterford, the Department of Psychiatry at UHW, and Newport Daycare Centre in Dungarvan. I also facilitated workshops with Headway Cork, focusing on comics creation under the theme "Living with Brain Injury."

In Montreal, I had the pleasure of planning, organizing, and coordinating the children's section of the NDG Arts Walk festival for two consecutive years as the Youth Programming Coordinator. My involvement with the Waterford Walls International Street Art Festival spanned four years, during which I developed and coordinated the Volunteer Programme, managed daily festival administration, and oversaw various aspects of the festival, including sponsorship, artist and crew liaison, and wall owner coordination. In 2020, I took on the role of Covid-19 Manager, where I developed and implemented comprehensive safety protocols and training for all staff, artists, and volunteers.

Now, I pour my creativity and passion into my own business, Mad Jessie, designing vibrant outdoor accessories that are made to make people feel great about themselves.

I also run a variety of workshops, sharing my expertise in art, comics, and mental health with diverse audiences. From community centers to corporate events, I tailor each workshop to the needs and interests of the participants. Additionally, I am available for commissioned work, bringing unique, custom art projects to life for clients looking for something truly special.

Artist In Residence

In 2015, I was the Artist in Residence at Waterford Healing Arts Trust (WHAT) in University Hospital Waterford. Her residency included engaging the patient population in the creative process, running individual and group workshops with the Child and Adolescent Mental Health Unit, and Chronic Pain Management.

I also ran the yearly summer camp and through this residency applied for and was accepted on the Participatory Arts and Mental Health Panel, running further storytelling and comic creation workshops for the clients at the ATU in St Otteran's Hospital, in DOP UHW, and Newport Daycare Centre.
