Monday Makes: Eco-Friendly Vintage Gift Wrapping with Found Objects

Oh my goodness - Are you last-minute gifting? No wrapping paper in the house?? Don't worry, heres a great way to wrap your gifts and have them looking fab in time for tomorrow night!

This week, I’m sharing a fun, eco-friendly way to wrap gifts using items you might already have around the house.

This DIY tutorial is all about adding a unique, nostalgic touch to your gifts while staying sustainable and budget-friendly.

Materials You’ll Need

  • Wrapping Paper: Old newspapers, vintage maps, sheet music, or brown kraft paper. Even pages from second-hand books make great gift wrap
  • Ribbon: Old photo film from film rolls, fabric strips, or twine.
  • Decorative Touches: Dried flowers, buttons, stamps, or twigs.

Step-by-Step Instructions

1. Choose Your Paper

  • Start by picking out old newspapers or vintage paper items like sheet music or maps. These give a rustic or nostalgic feel to your wrapping.
  • Lay your gift on the paper and cut a large enough piece to wrap it neatly.

2. Wrap the Gift

  • Wrap the gift as you would with any wrapping paper, folding the edges neatly. Don’t worry if the paper crinkles a bit—that adds to the charm!

3. Add a Unique Ribbon

  • Instead of traditional ribbon, use twine, fabric strips, or old photo film from film rolls. (You can find these at second-hand stores or even online at marketplaces like eBay or Etsy.)
  • Wrap the 'ribbon' around the gift and tie it off for a distinctive, vintage touch. If using photo film, staple it together to make a bow!

4. Decorate with Found Objects

  • Add some extra flair by attaching small, found objects such as dried flowers, buttons, or twigs. Secure them under the ribbon for a lovely finishing touch.
  • For a personal touch, you could also add a small tag made from leftover paper scraps or a stamped message.

Where to Find These Items

  • Newspapers: If you don’t have old newspapers at home, check your local library, coffee shops, or even ask neighbours. Second-hand shops sometimes have vintage papers too.
  • Photo Film Rolls: Old camera shops or online marketplaces like eBay, Etsy, or even charity shops can be good places to find film rolls.
  • Other Materials: Look for buttons, ribbons, and small decorative items at charity shops, thrift stores, or craft fairs. You can often find unique, inexpensive items that add personality to your wrapping.

Why Eco Wrapping?

Reusing materials reduces waste and makes each gift feel one-of-a-kind. Plus, vintage-inspired wrapping can add a lot of charm without spending extra money.
