Monday Makes: DIY Twine & Wool-Wrapped Christmas Decorations

A great one to do with the kids! And a fab way to use up old cardboard and any bits of wool or string you might have lying around the house.

This week’s Monday Makes is all about creating charming, rustic Christmas decorations with twine or wool! These DIY ornaments bring a cozy, handmade touch to your holiday decor and are perfect for your tree or as thoughtful, unique gift toppers.

Get ready to add some warmth and creativity to your holiday setup—let’s make something special together!

Materials You’ll Need

  • Cardboard: For cutting out your chosen shape (e.g., star, Christmas tree).
  • Glue: A glue gun is ideal, but any quick-drying glue will work.
  • Twine or Wool: Use twine or jute for a rustic look, or opt for wool (like white sparkly wool) to match your colour palette.
  • Decorative Touches: Pom poms, wooden beads, small cardboard stars, or anything else you want to add.

Step-by-Step Instructions

1. Cut Out Your Shape

  • Start by cutting a simple shape from cardboard. Choose a star, a Christmas tree, or any festive design that resonates with you.

2. Prepare Your Wrapping Material

  • If using twine or jute, cut lengths that will easily wrap around your cardboard shape. If using wool, ensure it fits your colour palette for a cohesive look (eg, red & green, or white).

3. Attach the Twine/Jute or Wool

  • For twine or jute: Apply a small amount of glue to one end of the cardboard shape and start wrapping. Add glue as you go to secure the twine in place.
  • For wool: Similar to twine, begin wrapping the wool around the shape, gluing as needed to keep it secure. Wool can add a cozy, festive touch!

4. Create a Jute-Wrapped Star

  • For the hollow star, cut out a star shape from cardboard and a smaller one for the inner part. Wrap jute around the outer star, leaving the centre hollow. You can secure the smaller star inside if desired.

5. Add Decorations

  • Once you’ve wrapped your shape, glue on pom poms, wooden beads, or cardboard stars for extra flair. Feel free to leave it plain for a minimalist approach.

Where to Find Materials

  • Cardboard: Use old boxes from deliveries or packaging materials. Local shops may have leftover cardboard.
  • Twine/Jute or Wool: Find twine in garden centres, which can often be cheaper than craft shops. Wool can also be found in various shops.
  • Decorative Items: Look for pom poms and beads in craft stores, or use items you already own, like old buttons or beads from broken jewellery.

Why DIY?

  • Making your decorations allows you to create something unique while being eco-friendly. Plus, it’s a great opportunity to spend quality time with family and kids—after all, isn’t that what this season is all about in the end?
